Introduction
“108 Heroes—Tales from The Water Margin” is an adaptation by renowned novelist Chang Ta-chun of the classic Chinese novel The Water Margin, directed by the company’s founder and modern Peking opera pioneer Wu Hsing-kuo. Lin Wen-Pin, distinguished traditional Chinese ballad singer and storyteller will also serve as on-stage raconteur, leading the audience into the exciting world of ancient heroes. The performance, which combines Chinese poetry, Peking opera, ballad singing, modern dance, and alternative rock music (created by the pop singer Chau Wakin) is meant to challenge conventional ideas about Chinese theater.
Five rising stars of Contemporary Legend Theater bring the tale back to life, interpreting twenty characters and twenty-seven stories from the novel. The play takes a look at modern culture through the prism of tradition and incorporates traditional elements into contemporary performance. They sing in both Peking-opera style and rap; they dress in the avant-garde, hip-hop clothing of modern youth, but with traditional accessories and patterns; they wear Peking opera makeup that symbolizes fixed characters, such as the leading man and lady, the supporting male role, and the clown, while adding innovative, humorous elements.
With “108 Heroes—Tales from Water Margin,” CLT hopes to give Peking opera a more youthful incarnation, to attract a broader audience, and to open up innovative directions for young actors to explore.
